Luka

My head was spinning. Declan had gotten some good shots in. I leaned forward letting the hot water run down my head and back, the cuts on my face, my knuckles stinging. The drive home was kind of a blur. I couldn’t stop thinking of Declan lying there on the concrete. I hope he survives, I told him to tap out and he wouldn't do it. I let my guard down and he got the upper hand on me for a minute. I shook my head and finished, jumped out, dried off, and wrapped the towel around my waist.

I opened the door walking into the bedroom. Alora was pacing back and forth, one arm across her body, her hand clutching her phone. The other leaning against it holding onto her chin. She stopped and looked up at me, eyes wide. I stepped towards her, “What's wrong with you?”

She shook her head and took a deep breath, “nothing you’re, okay?”

“I’m fine,”

I looked down at her phone, “did you get a phone call?”

She glanced at the phone in her hand. “No, I was just, uh, it's nothing.”

She shook her head, “I am going to get ready for bed.” She started towards the bathroom.

I grabbed her arm, stopping her. “You sure everything’s okay?”

She looked into my eyes. Her mouth parted like she was getting ready to say something, and her eyes closed a little longer than just a blink. She shook her head, “all good. I told you to stop worrying about me.”

“No, you told me to stop pretending I gave a shit about you. But either way, I can’t. For the time being, I am your husband, and you can talk to me. About anything.”

She stared at me for a moment. “I won't be your problem for much longer.” She pulled away from me, making her way into the bathroom, the door closing behind her. I listened as she turned the water on. I leaned my forehead to the door, contemplating breaking it down if I had to. Telling her she wasn't a problem, that she consumed my thoughts constantly. But I didn't, I was afraid she would retreat further, put those walls up even higher. Push me away.

I slipped into boxers and climbed into my side of the bed. I looked at the bathroom door, wishing she would give me a sign she was feeling just a little bit of what I was. Anything to let me know I wasn't completely alone in this. A yawn rolled from my chest, my eyes growing heavy. I couldn't tear myself from looking at the door. Waiting for her to come out, to climb into bed next to me. My vision blurred as my eyelids bobbed up and down, sleep taking over my weary body.

I jerked awake and looked around, the room was dark. I reached over, Alora wasn't in bed. I rubbed my eyes and sat up as they adjusted to the dark room. I grabbed my watch off the bedside table, checking the time, four AM.
